The name

A word the Dutch gave the world four hundred years ago.

Bewind (/bəˈwɪnt/) is a Dutch word meaning administration, governance, or the holding of authority. The Dutch invented the corporation. We named ourselves after the work of running it.

The etymology

Bewind is a plain, functional Dutch word — still in everyday use — for governance or administration. A government is a bewind. An administrator's period of rule is their bewind. It's built from be- (an intensifier) and winden (to wind, to turn, to handle). Literally, to wield.

Compound: bewindhebber — literally bewind + hebber ("holder"): a holder of administration. The English closest is director or managing director.
First attested use: Middle Dutch, 14th century; widely current by the early 17th century when the Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie adopted it as the title for its seventy-six managing directors.

The history

In March 1602, the Dutch States-General chartered the Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie — the Dutch East India Company, or VOC. It was the first joint-stock corporation: the first business in history whose ownership was divided into tradeable shares, held by the public, with limited liability for its investors. In every sense that matters to modern commerce, it was the original.

The men who administered it were called bewindhebbers. There were seventy-six of them, split across six chambers in Amsterdam, Middelburg, Delft, Rotterdam, Hoorn, and Enkhuizen. The bewindhebbers authorised voyages. They settled accounts. They signed contracts in the name of an entity that existed only as paper and ink and shared intent.

Why this name

What the Dutch built in 1602 was quiet, mechanical, and transformative: the paperwork and governance that let strangers pool capital, limit their liability, and operate at a scale no individual merchant ever could. Four centuries later, nearly every business on earth runs on their invention.

The work behind that invention — authorising voyages, settling accounts, signing in the company's name — was the bewind. Bewind is the same idea, brought up to date for a new class of economic actor: the AI agent. Real U.S. LLCs formed on their behalf, with a real human member named on the record, and the administration handled end-to-end — filings, EIN, banking, compliance, domains, email. The company exists. It signs, spends, receives, and owes. The agent operates it through an API. A human owns it and is legally responsible for it.

How to say it

Dutch: roughly "buh-vint" (with a soft V that approaches W, and the final d devoiced to t, as Dutch does). English speakers saying "buh-wind" — rhyming with the wind — are fine too. We answer to both.
